Alcoholism is a word synonymous with addiction or abuse, alcohol being the most abused substance in the world. This makes it extremely important for the people around alcoholics to know and recognize the alcoholism signs. Its important to understand how alcohol causes dependence. When alcohol reaches the brain it releases dopamine and serotonin both these chemicals are responsible for causing euphoria and a sense of well being.

The reason most people abuse this substance is for the sense of well being and euphoria it induces. Most alcoholics have tensions, stress, emotional problems and financial difficulties which they try to forget when under the influence of alcohol. Alcoholism signs are very peculiar and follow a particular sequence. The first sign is drinking in isolation; the addict tries to be alone while drinking. This stems from the fact that he or she is guilt conscious knowing that they cannot do with out alcohol and that the amount of alcohol they need is slowly increasing.

Drinking increasing amounts of alcohol is the very next sign and this happens because the body needs more and more alcohol to bring about the same effect of euphoria. The next lot of signs are setting aside specific times for drinking, these are generally after work or late evenings. The addict begins lying and getting upset when stopped and questioned about his whereabouts at this particular time. Eventually all social gatherings are centered on this very act of consuming alcohol.

The alcoholism signs which most affects the life of the addict is the change in nature brought about by this substance abuse. The alcoholic becomes aggressive and gets offended by small things which were at one time taken in light spirit by him. Spirit is the word and substance which causes these aggressive and reckless behavioral alcoholism signs. The family starts suffering causing fights and disturbances at home, this makes matters worse. To escape from these domestic tensions the alcoholic turns to the bottle for support.

The physical alcoholism signs like blood shot eyes, swollen face, tremors and slurred speech helps one identify an alcoholic. They start keeping alcohol at the most unlikely places at office or home and are disinterested in almost everything else in life. Loss of appetite, liver problems, gastric acidity and pancreatitis can all cause physical discomfort and pain to the addict. Eventually there is withdrawal early in the morning and the alcoholic needs a drink first thing in the morning, this is one of the most serious signs of alcoholism.

Need for the body to have a drink first thing in the morning indicates the degree of dependency of the body on alcohol. If the body doesn’t get alcohol at regular intervals the person goes into withdrawal. The signs and symptoms of withdrawal are as serious as those of chronic alcoholism and need to be treated. When de-addiction treatment is started the first thing done is treating the withdrawal, when the signs of withdrawal are taken care of its easy for the addict to stop drinking.

Overcoming addiction to alcohol is a tedious process. It can be done in 2 stages, the first stage being the early recovery and the later part being the long term soberness. It is very essential, for treating or overcoming and alcohol addiction, to recognize the signs of alcoholism and to be clear with the causes that led the victim to this phase of addiction. It is a known fact that addiction does not occur over a night. It is a long term process supported by the subject himself.

The first stage of overcoming addiction is the recovery phase. This is when the victim is completely abandoned from the use of alcohol. This stage, basically, acts as a stage of shock for the person when his world seems to have turned upside down. There is no more alcohol to hold on to when the person experiences physical and mental displeasure. He finds himself more vulnerable to the environment, since the only friend of his, alcohol, has been taken away from him. This is the situation when many of the addicts run away from rehab, or at least try to but are unsuccessful. While the subject feels he is getting more and more ill without alcohol, actually he is getting better. These are called withdrawal symptoms nausea, headaches, hangovers, vomiting, stomach upsets, etc. Apart from physical ailments, withdrawal symptoms bring neurological damages and the person begins to assume illusions as true. This condition is just as if the flame of a lamp shines the best when it is about to die. The pains and signs of alcoholism show up in their highest when they are about to fade away. It is this stage that the addict needs to sustain well for overcoming addiction to alcohol.

The target of the next stage is to achieve long term soberness. By this time, the signs of alcoholism have, almost, vanished. This phase, along with medications and other treatments, requires that the victim must have courage to restart his life again. But this isn’t as simple as pressing the restart button of a computer. It is a lot more painful. This is because the person has to begin his life all over again, since there is no more alcohol to support him in the bad times. The patient, now, needs to be responsible for his own good and bad times, prevent them and support himself when they arrive. Just like when a close friend or a lover gets excluded from one’s life and they have to begin to relive, similarly one has to begin to learn to live again after exclusion of alcohol from life.

An alcoholic definition may vary from person to person but all are similar in describing a person that abuses alcohol. In this article I am going to give you an alcoholic definition and some of the effects of alcohol on persons that abuse it.
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disabling addictive disorder. It is characterized by compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol despite its negative effects on the drinker’s health, relationships, and social standing. Every person acts differently from the effects of alcohol. That is why a certain person can take one drink and set the glass down and another person will have a drink and be unable to stop drinking until they pass out. If you are concerned that a friend or loved one may be abusing alcohol then you need to know the warning signs.
One sign of alcohol abuse is when a person starts incorporating alcohol into more activities throughout their day. You may notice them to stop doing things that are normal to their routine if they are unable to include alcohol into that particular activity. They could possibly start hanging around individuals who share the same affinity for alcohol as them and stop hanging around other friends who do not drink or do not drink as much as they do.
Another sign to look for is them putting their drinking ahead of important things in their life such as paying bills. If you start hearing them complaining about bills and wanting to borrow money for necessities but are still finding a way to buy alcohol every night then you know for certain that they have a problem.
These are just a couple of signs of alcoholism and you should learn more about them and how to talk to their friend or family member in a way to help them with this problem. They may require outside help from a professional if their drinking interferes with their personal and professional life. What you need to do is be able to spot the warning signs of alcoholism at its earliest stage.

Alcoholism is a stage of disease caused due to an excessive intake of alcohol. The Alcoholism physical signs develops in person when the acute form of this disease is changed to it chronic form with time and disproportionate usage of alcohol. The personal tolerance of a person to alcohol is another factor the effects the physical health of that person. The temporary effects of alcoholic drinks sometimes vary from outgoing, irritating behavior to severe illness or even demise.

Mild utilization of alcoholic drinkables for around two pegs may damage reasoning ability in a person and results in poor judgment. This can also lead to lower reticence that changes the normal behavior of the person. For instance, the person becomes more conversational and shows extraordinary sexual desires.

Another serious stage that is caused due to consistent alcohol intake is lack of coordination and reaction especially during vehicle driving. Most of the people who intake a small quantity of alcohol feels that they are all right and are able to drive. However, they do not realize the fact that the toxic beverage suppresses both their mental capabilities and the reflexes. The main cause of vehicle accidents around the world is due to the effect of alcohol on man.

The blood vessels in the human body quickly absorb the alcohol consumed. The absorption rate depends upon the quantity of intake, duration and the quantity as well as the quality of food consumed. If the person has a habit of taking fat and carbohydrate rich food, the rate of absorption of alcohol to the blood stream will decrease to a greater extent. This is not same in every case, especially with champagne that absorbs faster.

The physical symptoms of alcoholism usually start to expose after ten to fifteen minutes after the alcohol consumption. The BAC or the blood and alcohol content reach its max after half an hour of alcohol intake. The BAC remains stable until the person’s liver is capable of alcoholic metabolism.

Major Physical Signs of Alcoholism:

There are some major short-term physical signs of alcoholism in a human body. They are:

* Decreased Inhibitions: When the blood alcohol content in a person arrives at 0.05, the normal behavior starts to vary markedly. A person addicted to alcohol is not aware of the fact that the toxic harmful drug can badly affect his behavior. The physical signs include sexual promiscuity, vehicle driving under the alcohol influence, unlawful drug utilization and sometimes violence.

* Lack of Harmonization: When the BAC reaches 0.10, the person is badly affected with inaudible speech due to poor harmonization. The alcohol intoxication affects the thinking of the user and tends to lack of reasoning and coordination. These can further lead to many falls as well as major accidents.

* Pass Out and Memory Loss: The continuous usage of alcohol affects the normal functioning of the bran. Since the blood stream of a human being absorbs toxic materials quickly and sent this to the brain, the person will be affected with memory loss and pass outs. They are not even aware of their own actions at certain times.

* Nausea or Vomiting: When you consume a huge quantity of alcohol that is considered as a poison, our body tries to resist the toxic material by creating nausea or vomiting in the consumer. In other cases, the person consuming alcohol feels nauseous since the alcohol badly affects the sense of equilibrium of the body.

Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms

Alcoholism is a dynamic craving for alcohol which often leads to the compulsive consumption of alcohol. The reason behind this craving is heavily discussed and represents on of the characteristic alcoholism signs and symptoms, but the most well liked sentiments are that it’s a chemical or nutritional inequality, a genetic predisposition, a neurological effect due to runaway learning mechanisms or a disability to control one’s own want for pleasure.

Alcoholism is commonly a questionable subject, but obviously there are a selection of alcoholism signs and symptoms to keep an eye out for. Some believe it to be a biological illness, but the lack of capability to tie it to a particular biological causation makes this is a political debate and not a medical one. Alcohol obsession has been identified as having diverse elements.

Mental addiction involves those things which convince an individual that they gain benefit from the utilization of the substance, and is one of the key alcoholism signs and symptoms present in most alcoholics to a certain level. As an example, if they suspect that they’re much more socially adept while drunk or that it allows them to help handling of stress, then they would believe that any problems caused were worth the advantages.

Physical obsession or reliance involves the physical adaptation of someone’s biological systems to the continuing presence of alcohol in their system. A fall in the level of alcohol causes reverse disequilibria leading to withdrawal problems, which for alcohol can be dangerous and is obviously is one of the physical alcoholism signs and symptoms many experience.

For additional information on alcoholism signs and symptoms check out my blog Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms

Neurochemical obsession involves the hijacking of existing learning mechanisms to assure the system a habit forming behavior is good for it, regardless of all proof to the against this, and is one of the less clear alcoholism signs and symptoms.

Endorphin is the body’s way of telling the mind a behavior is good for it. We release endorphin into the blood stream during sex, exercise and consumption of some foods as an example, and this is in command of a runners high and afterglow. This is more than only a good feeling, it is teaching our brain that these are the behaviors that it should repeat, and is one of the most powerful alcoholism signs and symptoms. It’s been demonstrated in countless clinical tests that mammals with more active endorphin systems are much more subject to alcohol obsession. The rationale is often because alcohol triggers the release of endorphins into our system, and we learn that alcohol drinking is a behaviour that we should repeat.

The social issues, or alcoholism signs and symptoms, stemming from beer issues regularly include loss of work, cash issues, marital conflict and divorce, convictions for crimes like drunk driving or public disorder, loss of accommodation, and loss of respect from others who may see the difficulty as self-inflicted and simply dodged. Alcohol dependence is affecting not only the dependent but can deeply impact the family members around them. Kids of alcohol family can be affected even after they are grown, the behaviors typically exhibited by such kids are called Adult youngsters of Alcoholics Syndrome.

That covers a bit of what I found through some of the research I completed, but check out The Sobriety Solution for more information.

Learn to recognize the warning signs in yourself or a loved one. To complete this How-To you will need: Reflection Observation skills Honesty Step 1: Weigh the importance of alcohol to you or a loved one. Is there a general preoccupation with drinking, like when, where, and with whom the next round will begin? Is it difficult to stop drinking once it starts, or to stick to a limit? Is a life without drinking impossible to imagine? Step 2: Consider how much alcohol is consumed. Does drinking take place on a daily basis? Is binge drinking more than five drinks in one sitting a commonplace event? Do hangovers and blackouts occur frequently? Tip: The compulsion to finish every drink — and even other people’s — is a red flag. Step 3: Examine the motives for drinking. Using alcohol as a mood enhancer or coping mechanism is common among alcoholics. Step 4: Think about the guilt, if any, associated with drinking. Have there been promises to cut down? Lies told about the amount consumed, or about drinking altogether? Step 5: Measure tolerance for alcohol. Being able to …

The signs of alcoholism are often ignored in the early stages until it becomes apparent that you are living with an alcoholic. No matter how much you love someone or want to take care of them, dealing with an alcohol addiction is a situation no one can really prepare for.

As the signs of alcoholism develop and become recognizable in an individual, family and friends can often think back in time and remember the exact signs of alcoholism that they never realized or did not think it was something they should address immediately. Instead of allowing the almost certain end result of living with an alcoholic, learn the top 5 signs of alcoholism that you can interrupt in the beginning stages and prevent yourself or someone you love from dealing with an alcohol addiction.

1. High tolerance for alcohol is one of the signs of alcoholism that are always left undetected. Many people occasionally drink a bit too much during a holiday or random celebration over the weekend. However, when people begin to increasingly need more and more alcohol just to experience the effect of the alcohol they are usually developing number of signs of alcoholism at the same time.

2. Becoming unsociable. Alcoholics are not usually social drinkers; instead, they would rather drink alone. The people who are living with an alcoholic would sometimes notice that the craving to drink has become so strong that the alcoholic finds it hard to focus or think about anything else. Very commonly, they will turn down spending time with family and friends unless the event or celebration actually involves alcohol.

3. Changes in appearance and health. When living with an alcoholic you must remember that alcohol is a drug and for alcoholics the brain becomes dependent on the drug over time. As the alcohol cravings advance nausea, tremors, irritability, loss of coordination and other physical alcoholic symptoms may become evident. Their eyes can become sunken and red rimmed while the skin can turn sallow and dry scaly patches can occur. Many alcoholics will lose a large amount of weight. Alcoholics also tend to neglect their physical appearance and may have a shaggy beard, raggedy hair and wear rumpled ill fitting clothing.

4. Risky behaviors. As the disease continue to develop, you can experience the changes in the behavior of someone controlled by alcoholism. These changes in behavior are sure signs of alcoholism. They may get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence even when they are dealing with legal consequences; they may fail to show up to work or pick up the kids from school and will often not have a valid reason for their absence.

5. Memory loss. This is one of the advanced signs of alcoholism. When consuming large quantities of alcohol, someone with an alcohol addiction can fall unconscious and will often wake up without any recollection of what they have done. Some may remember their actions but feel guilty or regretful over what their obsession with alcohol leads them to do. Under the grip of the drug, an alcoholic’s personality can alter, resulting in verbal or physical abuse.

By recognizing the signs of alcoholism early, you can quickly get started on learning an approach that will get the one you love the help they need before the addiction becomes all consuming. Although living with an alcoholic can feel hopeless the key to getting out of this nightmare is the right knowledge put into action urgently!

Alcohol is a word that appears so much in our daily lives and culture that it is difficult for a non-alcoholic to imagine a life of alcohol addiction. Yet, no matter how much one may despise the term and the addiction, psychiatrists describe an alcoholic as one who exhibits any or all of these qualities: an irresistible thirst for alcohol, total loss of control once he or she starts drinking, and a certain tendency of relapse into the addiction after a session of rehabilitation.

Effects of alcohol: Alcohol dependency can have serious and deleterious effects on the individual’s health, and more importantly, on the family.

Some of the physical effects of alcohol addiction are liver cirrhosis; damage to the nervous system and pancreas, heart disease, alcoholic neuritis, and sexual dysfunction and related disorders, any of which can be a cause of death in the alcohol addict.

By far, the greatest reason for which alcohol is considered a social evil is the effect it has on the family. Children of Alcoholics (COAs) experience the effects of having an alcoholic parent or sibling from the earliest stages of their upbringing. Alcoholic parents are proven beyond doubt to be vastly inferior as caregivers.

Most alcoholic parents generally discourage their children from socializing. They are known to be unpredictable, volatile and inconsistent in dealing with children. They transmit most of the symptoms of their addiction to their children, who suffer psychosomatic ailments like depression, headache, eating disorders, stomach upsets and insomnia. COAs are almost certain to develop learning disabilities.

Worst of all, these negative influences and effects grow into their adulthood, since childhood impacts emotional development of later life greatly. Such children normally have tendencies like fretfulness, undue nervousness and maladjustment with society, and usually become unsuccessful parents themselves.

It is common to find that the education of such children gets disrupted because huge portions of the family income get spent on alcohol consumption by the addict in the family. When these children, bereft of love, try to find other avenues from which they can fill this lacuna at home, there are good chances of their ending up looking for the missing emotional comfort with the wrong people. This can lead to further family and social tensions. They could find solace in such habits as drugs or alcohol itself, or worse, crime.

Domestic violence, one of the most important products of alcoholism, costs the American economy anywhere between $ three billion and $ 10 billion a year by way of losses caused by absenteeism, healthcare costs, reduced employee turnover and so on.

Withdrawal symptoms: these can often lead to various complications. These include nausea, sweating, nausea and continuous shaking of the hands.

Addiction treatment programs: alcoholism addiction treatment programs take up long term, step-by-step methods in helping the addict deal with the addiction. A detox center first rids the body of the toxins the addiction would have brought in.

Drug and alcohol rehab centers try to inculcate coping techniques in the addict. A treatment center comes up with detailed counseling, supportive programs and encourages interaction with self help groups. Some rehabs encourage harm-reduction techniques such as group therapy, psychotherapy, medication, rationing and moderation of the drink and nutritional supplementation.
