Alcohol Addiction, or alcoholism weaks havoc not only in the life of the alcoholic but also in the lives of their family, friends and co-workers .
Alcoholism usually leads to problems in a relationship, health troubles, problems at work or school and finacial difficulties to name a few. These are all indirect consequences of alcoholism.

The Emotional Cost of Alcoholism:

A common consequence of alcoholism is depression. Alcohol depresses the central nervous system and makes the individual more depressed. Someone addicted to alcohol finds it difficult to control their emotions, an insecure person will become more insecure and a violent person will be more inclined to have violent outbursts whils drinking.

Alcoholism also affects the individuals motivation and the alcoholic will demonstrate reduced performance in their work or studies. and eventually will withdraw as alcoholism demands more and more of their attention. Alcoholism is also a high contributing factor in cases of suicide.

Studies have also indicated that alcohol addiction is likely to induce anxiety disorders, depression, and even delusions.

The Physical Consequences of Alcoholism.

Alcohol addiction may lead to stomach disorders including: ulcers, pancreatitus, pancreatic cancer, and gastritis.

Alcoholism also causes cardio vascular complications including cardiomyopathy and hypertension.

Alcohol addiction seriously demans the immune system and people troubled by alcohol abuse are likely to experience severe infections for example, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and various types of cancer.

Alcohol addiction can also damage the peripheral and central nervous system, leading to serious cognitive deterioration.

Alcohol-dependent males may also experience impotency, testicular wasting and gynecomastia.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause mental retardation, facial disfigurement and/or other neurological problems like foetal alcohol syndrome.

If you, or someone you care have a problem with alcoholism, do something about the problem before it becomes too severe. The sooner you do something about the problem the better. Please visit our forum for details about how to take control of this destructive and life threatening habit.

Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that many years of alcohol abuse can actually shrink the parts of the brain responsible forl learning and memory. The cortex of the frontal lobe is the area which is affected and this manifests itself in short term memory loss.

Any alcoholic who consumes large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time is in danger of getting alcohol related brain damage. How considerable the harm is depends upon the body of the alcoholic, the type and quantity of alcohol consumed, and the alcoholic’s diet

Brain damage can also be exacerbated by the nutritional deficiencies related to drinking. Malnutrition is frequently the outcome of unrestrained drinking and can affect the brain. Critical areas of the brain are injured due to vitamin deficiencies in particular, thiamine. Alcohol creates raised toxicity levels in the bodyand harms not only the brain, but also the liver, pancreas and kidneys.

The central nervous system is also affected by alcohol abuse.

If action is taken in the early stages ofalcoholism much of the damage can be reversible. Maybe even it will go away completely. The chance of recovery is greatly increased by giving up drinking completely, keeping a healthy diet and taking vitamins, especially vitamin B1 and thiamine. Liver functions can even be repaired with a little known vitamin called milk thistle.
