<div>Alcohol is one of the most addictive and most widely abused substances in our society and although its often overlooked, its a problem that is growing rapidly. All forms of alcoholism start off as an innocent drink but for some people the lack of self control can lead to a life of torture. For every single one of us there is a threshold and once you cross it, the drinking can swallow you whole and hold you in its grips. Its been said that falling into alcoholism is easy, but getting out is hard.</p>
<p>Once you get to a point where you are no longer in control then you are officially in trouble. If it controls you then you need help, but this is also where the biggest challenge lies. Anyone who has a problem can only be helped once he or she wants to be helped. No matter how good a psychologists you have, no one can be helped if they have resistance to the idea of being helped. No one can change without the willingness to change.</p>
<p>So, if you want to break free from alcoholism you need to reach that point where you want to change. To get there, you need to realize and admit that you have a problem. You need to admit to yourself that alcohol has taken a prominent position in your life and that you no longer have control over it. Once you get to this point, help is possible. <p>Could be: food, checking emails, watching TV, or perhaps shopping? All of the above?</p>
<p><strong>An addiction is anything you use to avoid feeling your feelings.</strong> It&#8217;s how we sabotage ourselves and resist what we say we most want. It&#8217;s how we disconnect from ourselves and Spirit.</p>
<p>If you are carrying around extra pounds it most likely means you&#8217;re taking in more food than you&#8217;re using up. Which means you&#8217;re eating when you&#8217;re not hungry &#8211; to avoid feelings. Food has become an addiction. Or perhaps you check emails all day, which stops you doing something more challenging that would impact your bottom line. It&#8217;s easy to do.</p>
<p><strong>Food has been an addiction for me ever since I can remember.</strong> In the early 80&#8242;s I joined compulsive eating groups in London and broke the binge/diet cycle. In recent times, even though I had released my extra pounds there was still this little addiction issue niggling at me and I could no longer avoid my guilty little secret: I was addicted to food and I was using that to sabotage myself. I see a similar pattern with emails!</p>
<p><strong>Here are some of the things I&#8217;ve learned that help me and may help you too.</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Notice what you&#8217;re doing. </strong>Whether it&#8217;s food or something else you&#8217;re doing unconsciously, just notice what&#8217;s what. What do you do automatically? Check emails, eat, watch TV, surf the Internet? As you watch your reactions, you&#8217;ll notice what you gravitate towards when you start to feel a bit uncomfortable about something.</p>
<p>Try Eckhart Tolle&#8217;s tip: ask yourself &#8220;Am I breathing?&#8221; Stop for a few moments, connect with your breath and just get present. Don&#8217;t even try to figure out what triggered your eating. That will keep you in your head and you&#8217;ll likely get so frustrated you&#8217;ll find yourself eating!</p>
<p>Eckhart Tolle talks about someone who gave up smoking overnight when nothing else he had ever tried had worked. And all he did was get present with the cravings. Usually to change a long standing habit it takes more time &#8211; but perhaps that&#8217;s just a story!</p>
<p>Bringing consciousness to what you&#8217;re doing is often enough to create the space to do something different.</p>
<p><strong>2. Cultivate Acceptance:</strong> you might not like it, but this is your present situation and what you resist persists. This habit will only change when you come to a place of acceptance &#8211; which is different from saying it&#8217;s OK for it to stay like that. This is how it is right NOW! Go easy on yourself and acknowledge your progress. Changing a habit takes time.</p>
<p><strong>3. In the case of food, ask yourself &#8220;Am I hungry?&#8221;</strong> Food&#8217;s a common one as it has such a pull on us. With other ones it could be &#8220;What am I avoiding?&#8221; by making this phone call now, or checking my emails yet again.</p>
<p><strong>4. Turn your addiction into a powerful alley in your awakening</strong>: in the case of food you can&#8217;t banish it from your life, which means the only way to change your relationship with it is to become more conscious. Even with emails or any other addictive behavior &#8211; you can use our pull towards compulsively checking them as a powerful alley in your transformation. Give yourself the space to be conscious.</p>
<p><strong>5. Create a life that feeds your soul: </strong>the more nourished you are on all levels, the less you&#8217;ll need to avoid your feelings. The clearer you are about your purpose here, the more you&#8217;re living your passions, the more juicy your vision for yourself is, the more your soul is being nourished and the less you&#8217;ll be drawn to things that pull you away from living an inspired life. Include things that are just for you. And for me, a healthy dollop of &#8216;me&#8217; time is part of the deal.</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s like a circle &#8211; the more we can be present, the more we awaken to our purpose, and the less attractive it is to have addictions and things that take us away from our SELF and Spirit.</strong></p>
