Is there an Alcoholism cure?
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a pill you could take which would cure you from alcoholism forever? The sad fact is that there isn’t and once you are addicted to alcohol there is no easy alcoholism cure. Support for alcoholics really does leave something to be desired,
I personally think the companies producing alcohol should take a some responsibility for the lives that they wreck with their products. The alcohol companies bombard us with advertising and give us the impression that it is cool to drink. Society sees drinking as acceptable when it clearly isn’t. The majority of suicides occur when the person has been drinking, alcohol causes of death of innocent people, families are subject to violent abuse from alcoholics, alcohol destroys your liver, date rapes occur when people have been drinking, there are unwanted pregnancies, relationships are destroyed and lives are wrecked.
People do things they would never normally do when they’ve been drinking so why the hell is it considered socially acceptable. when I quit drinking and was incredibly disappointed with the lack of support available. It’s fine if you’re wealthy and can afford to have quality counselling but for most of us we just can’t afford it and have to rely on groups like alcoholics anonymous.
I personally don’t think that Alcoholics Anonymous is a good thing, to me it just seems like another branch of the Church and statistically their recovery rate is not that great. People need to be strong, be encouraged to take responsibility for their lives and you certainly won’t find that in Alcoholics Anonymous.
The problem is that you really do have to hit rock bottom before you reach the point when you are ready to do something about your addiction, but for many people it is too late because by then you have most probably lost everything anyway. If you are that low you may not have much to live for anyway. Surely it is time for some radical changes in the way that society views drinking, it isn’t as glamorous as we’re made to believe, it’s a killer and far worse than smoking. How far do we have to go before the issue is taken seriously?
